Biography

Nadezhda Segal is a painter and educator whose professional journey unites academic training, decades of teaching experience, and a deeply personal artistic vision.

She was born in Stavropol and grew up in Anapa. She received her formal art education at an art college and later continued her studies at Krasnodar State University, specializing in teaching visual arts in art schools.

In Russia, she worked for ten years as a teacher at a specialized children’s art school in Pyatigorsk. This period became foundational in shaping her artistic and pedagogical philosophy — a synthesis of strong academic discipline and living creative expression.

After relocating to Canada, Nadezhda continued her teaching career, working at J School with students across all grade levels. Soon after, she founded her own art school, which has been successfully operating for over 33 years. Over the decades, the school has become an important part of the artistic community, educating and inspiring multiple generations of students.

In Canada, Nadezhda also co-founded the Association of Russian-Speaking Artists. Within the framework of this association, several projects were realized in collaboration with the Government of Canada. One of the collective works, the painting “D-Day” on a military theme, is housed in Ottawa at the Department of National Defence.

Nadezhda Segal’s artistic practice explores themes of memory, space, and inner journey. Her works unite the southern light of her childhood, architectural motifs, and the experience of movement between cultures and countries. Her recent series are deeply autobiographical — reflections on home, time, and personal transformation.

Her visual language is built upon a refined sensitivity to color, light, and atmosphere. For her, painting is a way to preserve lived experience and convey emotional states that cannot be expressed in words.
